Brightveld Energy

A concept website for a fictional Pretoria solar and backup power installer, built to show what a South African energy business website can look like when it answers the buyer's real questions: what size system, what it costs and what it will save.

The situation

Solar is a large purchase full of jargon, and most South African installer websites do little to help. They show a few package names and a contact form, and leave the buyer to work out whether they need 5 kW or 8 kW, how big a battery should be and what the paperwork involves. Visitors cannot get a sense of price without phoning, and many sites still quote incentives that have ended. Savings claims also have to stay honest under the Consumer Protection Act and the advertising code. The brief was to build a site that feels bright and confident, helps visitors size a system for themselves, and keeps every price and saving honest.

What we built

We built a fast, fifteen-page static Next.js site. The home page opens on the navy and sunrise palette of the logo, with a typical system and its starting price on the hero photo, then four services, a plain explanation of how a hybrid system works, the process from first call to switch-on, published starting prices, what every installation includes, the team, guides and common questions. Each service has its own page with who it suits, what is included, a four-step process, a price guide and questions. The system sizer works out an inverter, battery and panel count from four questions and shows a price range, saving and payback, with a summary bar on mobile so results are never out of sight. Its answers carry straight into a four-step site visit booking that skips weekends and South African public holidays. Because the business is fictional, the booking confirmation states clearly that nothing was sent or stored. The site also includes a POPIA privacy notice, terms, business, Service, Article, FAQPage and breadcrumb schema, security headers and a full sitemap.

Key strategies
  • Checked the name before designing anything: no South African business trades as Brightveld, and the name carries its own symbol, a sun rising over the veld
  • Wrote the logo prompt, then rebuilt the approved logo as true geometry: a circular dome, seven rays with evenly spaced gaps mirrored about the centre, and two hills, in full colour, one-colour and reversed versions with a favicon set
  • Matched the web font to the logo lettering by scoring candidates word by word: Figtree for the wordmark, headings and body text
  • Took the palette from the logo itself and checked every text colour against WCAG AA contrast, adding a deeper orange for orange text on white
  • Built a system sizer that turns a monthly bill, a goal and the appliances that must stay on into an inverter, battery and panel count, with a price range, monthly saving and payback, and every assumption shown next to the result
  • Calibrated the sizer so its prices agree with the published starting prices, and made it suggest backup only when panels would take too long to pay back
  • Researched current South African rules and wrote three guides: sizing a system, the Certificate of Compliance and SSEG registration, and which tax incentives still apply in 2026
  • Added metric-matched fallback fonts for Windows, Apple, Android and Linux so the page does not jump while fonts load on slower mobile connections
Results achieved
  • Custom logo rebuilt as precise geometry, with a full brand kit and favicon set
  • System sizer that suggests an inverter, battery and panels with a price range, saving and payback
  • Four-step site visit booking that picks up the sizer's answers, with validation and keyboard support
  • Three guides checked against current South African rules, including the 2026 position on solar tax incentives
  • Every price and saving shown as an estimate with its assumptions, in line with consumer protection rules
  • Lighthouse on mobile: 100 for performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO on every page tested
  • Zero layout shift on mobile and desktop, even when the web fonts load slowly
  • Pure static build with no database, so pages load fast and there is very little to maintain
The outcome

The concept shows that a solar installer's website can do much of the first conversation itself: helping people understand what they need, what it roughly costs and what happens next, before anyone picks up the phone. For a real installer, the same foundation can feed sizer results and bookings straight into their CRM, calendar or WhatsApp.
