Kestrel Attorneys Inc.
A concept website for a fictional Sandton commercial law firm, built to show what a South African legal practice can look like online when the website does real work: routing enquiries, explaining fees and booking consultations.
Most South African law firm websites are years old, built on templates and written in the same formal language. They list practice areas, show a phone number and stop there. Visitors cannot tell which attorney handles their kind of matter, what a first meeting costs or how to book one without phoning during office hours. On top of that, attorneys cannot market themselves the way other businesses do: the Legal Practice Council's Code of Conduct rules out claims of superiority, comparisons with other firms and naming clients without consent. The brief was to build a site that feels premium and modern, helps visitors act, and stays inside those rules.
We built a sixteen-page static Next.js site with no database, so it costs nothing extra to host. The home page opens on the Sandton skyline at night, graded into the logo's charcoal and gold, followed by the case matcher: visitors pick their situation and how urgent it is, and the site names the right practice area, explains what usually happens next and flags hard deadlines. Each of the five practice areas has its own page covering what is handled, a step-by-step process, how it is charged, the attorney on the file and common questions. A dedicated fees page sets out the fixed consultation fee, fixed quotes, hourly rates by seniority and how conveyancing is quoted. Three plain-English insight articles on CCMA conciliation, prescription and property costs were checked against current sources, including the 2026 SARS transfer duty threshold. The booking flow takes the visitor from matter to date and time to contact details to confirmation, skipping weekends and South African public holidays, and it picks up the answers from the case matcher. Because the firm is fictional, the booking confirmation states clearly that nothing was sent or stored. The site also includes a POPIA privacy notice, a disclaimer, LegalService, Service, Article, FAQPage and breadcrumb schema, and a full sitemap.
- Checked the name before designing anything: the working name from our roadmap, Vantage Attorneys, already belongs to real firms, so the concept became Kestrel Attorneys Inc. to avoid any confusion with a real practice
- Researched law firm logo trends and deliberately avoided the usual scales, gavels and pillars. The mark is a hovering kestrel whose level wings read as a balance, so the idea of justice is there without the cliche
- Wrote the logo prompt, then rebuilt the approved logo as clean vector files: a perfectly symmetrical symbol and outlined lettering in stacked, horizontal and reversed versions, plus a favicon set
- Matched the web fonts to the logo lettering by scoring about 50 Google Fonts glyph by glyph: Castoro for the wordmark and headings, Red Hat Display for labels and body text
- Took the whole colour palette from the logo itself, then checked every text colour against WCAG AA contrast on both the dark and cream backgrounds
- Wrote all copy within paragraph 7.2 of the Legal Practice Council's Code of Conduct: no superiority claims, no comparisons, no client names, no promised results
- Built a two-question case matcher and a four-step booking flow so visitors can act on the site without making a phone call
- Added metric-matched fallback fonts for Windows, Apple, Android and Linux so the page does not jump while fonts load on slower mobile connections
- Custom logo and brand system: symmetrical vector mark, outlined wordmark, full lockup and favicon set
- Fonts matched to the logo lettering by glyph-by-glyph scoring against about 50 Google Fonts
- Case matcher that routes visitors to the right practice area and flags urgent deadlines
- Four-step online booking flow with validation, keyboard support and South African public holidays
- Copy written within the Legal Practice Council's marketing rules, with a POPIA privacy notice and disclaimer
- Lighthouse on mobile: 100 for accessibility, best practices and SEO on every page tested, 91 to 100 for performance
- Zero layout shift on mobile, even when the web fonts load slowly
- Pure static build on Vercel with no database: no extra hosting cost
The concept shows that a law firm website can feel established and serious while still doing practical work: helping people understand which kind of help they need, what it will cost and how to book it. For a real firm, the same foundation can connect to its practice management system, calendar and email.
