Plumbline Accounting & Tax

A concept website for a fictional firm of accountants and tax practitioners in Rosebank, Johannesburg, built to show what an accounting site can do when it answers the first question every visitor has: what does SARS take, and what is due next?

The situation

Most accounting firm websites look the same: a stock photo of a handshake, a list of services and a contact form. They say nothing a business owner can use, so the visitor leaves to search for a tax calculator or the next SARS deadline somewhere else. Accounting firms also have rules to work within. The SAICA, SAIPA and IRBA codes say marketing must be honest, with no exaggerated claims, no superiority claims and no comparisons that put other firms down. Under section 240 of the Tax Administration Act, anyone who gives tax advice for a fee must be a registered tax practitioner, and the Consumer Protection Act means prices must include VAT. The brief was to build an accounting site that is useful on the first visit, earns trust honestly and looks like nothing else in our portfolio.

What we built

We built a fast, twenty-one page static Next.js site on the navy, green and sage palette of the logo. The home page opens on a sentence with the visitor's own salary in it and a payslip card hanging from a plumb line, with a navy band below that counts down to the next SARS deadline. Below that come six services, the next five SARS dates with calendar downloads, three fixed-fee packages, how the firm works, the industries it serves, the team and common questions. The tax calculator works monthly or yearly and shows the working behind every figure. The tax calendar filters by individuals, provisional taxpayers, employers and VAT vendors, and greys out dates that have passed. The fees page has the package picker, a full comparison table and fixed prices for once-off work. Four guides include printable checklists. Because the firm is fictional, every tool runs in the browser and every confirmation says plainly that nothing was sent or stored. The site also includes a POPIA privacy notice, a disclaimer, AccountingService, Service, FAQPage, Article and breadcrumb schema and a full sitemap.

Key strategies
  • Checked the roadmap name first: Clarity Financial Solutions was already used by a debt consultancy and a UK firm, so we chose Plumbline, after the builder's tool for finding what is truly upright, which gives the firm a clear symbol for books that are true and exact
  • Wrote the logo prompt around a plumb bob on its line, avoiding the usual bar charts, arrows, calculators and coins, then rebuilt the approved logo as clean vectors, mirrored on a centre axis so it is exactly symmetrical
  • Matched the lettering to Outfit for the wordmark and descriptor, and took the navy, forest green and sage palette from the logo, adding a lighter mint for dark backgrounds so every text colour passes WCAG AA contrast
  • Designed a hero unlike any of our other builds: the headline is the calculator. The visitor types their salary into the sentence, SARS's share updates as they type, and a payslip card hangs from a plumb line that runs down the page
  • Built the tax calculator on the official SARS 2026/27 tables, with age rebates, medical scheme credits, the new R430 000 retirement cap and UIF, and checked its results by hand against the SARS formula
  • Built a live tax calendar for 2026/27 from the SARS filing season dates, moving each due date to the last business day before a weekend or public holiday, with a download that adds any date to your phone calendar with a reminder
  • Added a package picker that turns four questions into a fixed monthly fee, an industry selector with what the firm handles and what it watches for, and a four-step booking flow that skips weekends and public holidays
  • Checked every figure against SARS and National Treasury sources, which caught the VAT registration threshold rising to R2.3 million from 1 April 2026, and wrote all copy within the profession's marketing rules, with no invented reviews or results
  • Matched the fallback fonts to the site's own copy at every weight, fixed the hero's line breaks and added security headers, so the page stays still while it loads and the brand font shows on the first visit
Results achieved
  • Custom logo rebuilt as clean, exactly symmetrical vectors, with a full brand kit and a favicon that reads at 16 pixels
  • A hero built around the visitor rather than a template: their own salary in the headline, worked out live on the SARS 2026/27 tables
  • A full take-home pay calculator with rebates, medical credits, retirement deductions and UIF, checked by hand against the SARS formula
  • A live 2026/27 SARS tax calendar that counts down from today in Johannesburg and adds any date to a phone calendar with a reminder
  • A package picker with fixed monthly fees including VAT, an industry selector and four-step booking that skips public holidays
  • Lighthouse on mobile: 100 for accessibility, best practices and SEO on every page tested, 96 to 100 for performance, and 100 across the board on desktop
  • Every tool and the booking flow tested end to end on desktop and mobile, and no horizontal scrolling on any page from 320 to 1920 pixels wide
  • Pure static build with no database, so pages load fast and there is very little to maintain
The outcome

The concept shows that an accounting firm's website can be useful before anyone picks up the phone: showing a business owner what SARS takes, what is due next and what the firm would charge, in plain English and within the profession's rules. For a real firm, the same foundation can connect to its practice software and calendar, so bookings and enquiries go straight to the team.
